American Soilder

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?

I think that the most powerful imagae was the one where the guys are gathered around, 1 is holding a fake belt and they all look happy. I like this one because it shows that even though they are soilders who go to war and shoot guns they are still just people who like to mess around with their friends.

B. How do the images work together to tell a story?

They are all in black and white which make them all look good together like a complete collection and the camo in the uniforms adds lots of differnet shades of gray to the images.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?

They give a lot of background information and add a lot more emotion and feeling to the images.

D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.

He was a guy who decided to join the US army and he got trained and met a lot of friends. He also had some hard times though but it gets better for him and he eventually comes home after a year in iraq.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?

They are generally in the present tense.

F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average?
They are generally about 2-4 sentances long.
2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
They tell what Ian is doing and if their are other people in the photo it tells who they are.
3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
They go into more detail about the actions of what they are doing.
4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide?
The third sentance often has a quote in it from that scene that the photo was taken at.
5. Do any captions include a quote?
Yes some of them do include a quote as stated above.
6. Are there any that have four sentences?
Yes but very few have 4 sentences.
G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions?
Yes I do because it's like a story. It doesn't include that small maundane parts but highlights the best and the worst.
H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all?
Words have a different effect than pictures and if all stories were done in pictures you couldn't have ones that feature things like unicorns or magic because you can't capture those things in photos.
